About HCA Florida First Coast Neurosurgery

Patient-centered care

We provide experienced neurosurgical care for the communities of northeast Florida, including Orange Park and the greater Jacksonville area. Both Dr. Michael Horowitz and Dr. Cheslovas Rothschild are board-certified in neurological surgery and treat a wide range of conditions including spine and cranial/brain surgery.

Conditions we treat

We provide neurosurgery as well as cerebrovascular surgery for conditions, including:

  • Brain and spinal disorders
  • Brain tumors
  • Cranial nerve disorders
  • Hand and Arm Impairment Due to Stroke
  • Hemifacial spasms
  • Movement disorders
  • Spinal injury
  • Traumatic brain injury

Treating essential tremor & cranial nerve disorders

Essential Tremor is one of the more common movement disorders. The disorder often involves the involuntary shaking of a patient's hands, arms or the lower limbs. Essential Tremor can occur at any age but is most commonly associated with patients ages 40 years and older.

Using ultrasound-guided technology, we are able to precisely deliver thermal energy to the Ventralis Intermediate Nucleus (VIM) of the thalamus which reduces or eliminates tremor. This procedure is considered painless and minimally invasive with the patient being discharged same day.

We also treat Hemifacial Spasms (HN), Trigeminal Neuralgia (TN), Geniculate Neuralgia (GN), Glossopharyngeal Neuralgia (GLN), and Occiptal Neuralgia (ON) which are otherwise known as cranial nerve disorders.

Depending on the diagnosis, our range of treatments can vary from medications, use of ultrasound guided technology or radiation technologies, and in some cases, through surgery.

Suffering From Upper Extremity Impairment Due To Stroke?

We offer vagal nerve stimulator technology for the treatment of stroke patients who suffer from impairment in their hands and arms.

During this process, electrodes are placed around the vagus nerve in the neck where painless, mild pulses of electrical energy are delivered to the brain. As a result, neurotransmitters are released to stimulate the brain's motor cortex which controls the body's muscle movements and allows for improvement in hand and arm motor function.

Who qualifies?

Eligible patients are patients who are 9 months to 10 years from their responsible stroke and who continue to suffer with upper extremity impairment.

How do I learn more about this technology?
